A Midday Surprise: The Bats of Vida Bonita Pecos

Apr 21, 2025

Yesterday, as I strolled past our peaceful Trout Pond campsite in the bright midday sun, something unusual caught my eye. Just above the crystal-clear spring-fed waters, a small, swift shape darted through the air. At first, I thought it was a swallow or a dragonfly, but as it looped and glided in unpredictable patterns, I realized I was watching a bat—out in the middle of the day!

Seeing a bat during daylight hours isn’t common, but it does happen. Sometimes they’re disturbed from their roosts or are simply out for an early snack if insect activity is high. Whatever the reason, it was a rare and magical moment that made me pause and appreciate just how alive our forest really is.

Bats in the Pecos Wilderness

Here in the Pecos region of northern New Mexico, we’re lucky to share our land with several species of bats, including the Little Brown Bat and the Big Brown Bat. Most are nocturnal, preferring to emerge at dusk to feast on insects that thrive near water sources like our pond and the Pecos River. But daytime sightings, while less common, are a reminder that nature doesn’t always follow our schedules—and that we’re living among some truly remarkable creatures.

Bats are essential to the health of our ecosystem. They consume thousands of flying insects each night, acting as a natural pest control system that benefits not only humans, but also plants, crops, and other animals. Their presence at Vida Bonita Pecos is a sign that our forest and waterways are clean, balanced, and full of life.

A Sign of a Healthy Habitat

The appearance of that single bat in broad daylight was more than just an oddity—it was a sign of thriving biodiversity. Bats are sensitive to pollution and habitat destruction, so when they’re around, it typically means we’re doing something right.

We’ve worked hard to ensure that Vida Bonita Pecos remains a safe haven for wildlife. From the towering pines and aspens surrounding our campsites to the spring-fed waters of the Trout Pond and nearby meadows, this land hums with natural activity. Whether you’re staying in one of our luxury lodges or pitching a tent under the stars, guests often tell us how peaceful and alive the forest feels. That’s because it is.

Wilderness Moments You’ll Never Forget

Nature doesn’t run on a script. Sometimes, the most memorable experiences come when you least expect them—like spotting a bat flitting over the water beneath the midday sun. These are the kinds of moments that make Vida Bonita Pecos so special.

So when you visit, keep your eyes open—even during the day. Whether it’s a bat dancing over the pond, elk grazing at the edge of the forest, or trout shimmering beneath the surface, our land is full of surprises waiting to be discovered.
