My Favorite Fishing Spots Near Vida Bonita Pecos
May 20, 2025
One of the greatest joys of living and working out here in the Pecos Wilderness is being surrounded by some of the best fishing waters in New Mexico. As someone who’s transitioned from a career in surgery to running cabins and campsites at Vida Bonita Pecos, I’ve come to truly appreciate the slower pace and deep connection that comes with time spent outdoors—especially fishing with my kids, family, and friends.
Here are some of my favorite spots that we frequent often, all just minutes from our property at 2444 NM-63, Terrero, NM.
1. The Pecos River – Just a Short Walk Away
Right across the meadow from our cabins, the Pecos River is a place I’ve come to love. I can walk down in the morning with a cup of coffee, watch the mist lift off the water, and start my day with a few casts. I’ve shared some of my best memories with my kids here—teaching them how to cast, unhooking their first fish, and just sitting in the sun, laughing. The river’s loaded with rainbow and brown trout, and the stretch by our property is peaceful and full of life.
2. Cowles Ponds – Quick, Easy, and Perfect for Kids
Just five minutes up the road, Cowles Ponds is our go-to spot for a relaxed afternoon. These are small, stocked ponds that are perfect for young kids or folks who just want to catch fish without having to hike in. I’ve taken my little ones there more times than I can count. We bring snacks, a couple rods, and just enjoy the simplicity of it all. It's low-key, beautiful, and a great intro to fishing.
3. Jack’s Creek – For When You Want a Little Solitude
If I’m looking for some quiet time alone or a more “wild” fishing experience, I head up to Jack’s Creek. It’s a bit more remote, tucked away in alpine meadows, and full of native Rio Grande cutthroat trout. There’s something special about fishing those waters—no noise, just wind in the trees and the occasional rise on the surface. It's where I go when I want to unplug completely.
4. Mora Creek & Holy Ghost Creek – Rugged and Rewarding
I’ve hiked into both Mora Creek and Holy Ghost Creek with friends who are serious about their fly fishing. These spots are great for catch-and-release anglers and feel like real backcountry adventures. It’s not uncommon for us to come back tired, sun-kissed, and grinning ear to ear after a day exploring these creeks.

I’d love to share that experience with you. Come stay with us, fish the Pecos, and make some memories of your own.
