Spring In Pecos--Get Ready!

As I write this, the snow is coming down outside, covering our home in a soft blanket of white, and my thoughts turn to Spring. Springtime at Pecos offers us a unique blend of natural beauty, amazing weather, and engaging activities, making it an ideal season for a memorable getaway for our guests.

Weather Overview

As winter transitions into spring, Pecos experiences a gradual warming trend. In March, average high temperatures range from 50°F to 58°F, with lows between 27°F and 31°F. By May, highs increase to between 67°F and 76°F, providing comfortable conditions for outdoor pursuits. While we enjoy ample sunshine, we still dress in layers to accommodate the cooler mornings and evenings. But we get to spend those evenings sitting around a campfire.

 

Flora and Fauna

Spring brings a vibrant transformation to the Santa Fe National Forest surrounding Pecos BNB. Aspen and cottonwood trees sprout fresh leaves, and wildflowers such as Indian paintbrush and lupine begin to bloom, creating picturesque landscapes. Birdwatchers will delight in the return of migratory species, while wildlife enthusiasts may spot deer, elk, and other animals becoming more active during this season.

Outdoor Activities

The mild spring weather is perfect for exploring the numerous hiking trails near Pecos BNB. Trails like the Windsor Trail offer breathtaking views of the rejuvenated forest and flowing streams. Anglers can take advantage of the thawing waters in the Pecos River and Cowles Ponds, which are popular fishing spots. Remember to secure the necessary permits and adhere to local regulations when planning your fishing excursions.

Local Events and Cultural Experiences

Springtime in Pecos is marked by various community events and programs. The Pecos National Historical Park offers guided hikes such as "Birding the Pecos" along the South Pasture Loop Trail and "The Geologic Story at Pecos Pueblo," providing insights into the area's natural and cultural history. Additionally, the community celebrates Earth Day with river and road cleanups, fostering environmental stewardship and community spirit.  

 

Stargazing

Have you ever seen the Milky Way Galaxy? It's remarkable. With clearer skies and longer days, spring is an excellent time for stargazing. The low light pollution around Pecos BNB allows guests to witness constellations and celestial events with remarkable clarity. Bringing a telescope or simply laying under the stars can be a memorable part of your stay.
