The Guardians of Vida Bonita Pecos: Luna and Maxx

Nov 07, 2025

When you visit Vida Bonita Pecos, you’ll likely first be struck by the breathtaking landscape — tall pines, golden aspens, the clear rush of the Pecos River nearby. But look a little closer, and you’ll meet two of the most loyal and gentle protectors of this beautiful property: Luna and Maxx, our Great Pyrenees/Shepherd mix dogs.

These magnificent, snow-white dogs are not just pets — they are an essential part of life at Vida Bonita Pecos. They embody the spirit of the wilderness: protective yet peaceful, strong yet tender-hearted. Guests quickly fall in love with them, not only for their beauty and gentleness but also for the vital role they play in keeping the property — and everyone on it — safe and serene.

Nature’s Gentle Guardians

In the wilderness, harmony between people, animals, and the land is everything. Our 11-acre property sits nestled against the Santa Fe National Forest, home to not only deer and elk, but also the occasional bear and mountain lion. Having guardian dogs like Luna and Maxx allows us to live in peaceful coexistence with nature, while still ensuring that our guests — and our flocks of chickens, turkeys, and ducks — are well protected.

Both Luna and her son Maxx are large, majestic dogs with calm temperaments and steady eyes. Their size alone can deter predators from wandering too close, but it’s their deep instinct to protect that makes them truly remarkable. The Great Pyrenees lineage has been bred for centuries to guard livestock in mountain regions, and that instinct runs strong here in Pecos. Luna’s steady confidence and Maxx’s youthful energy create the perfect balance of vigilance and warmth.

The Rhythm of Their Days

Every morning, from 8 a.m. until dusk, Luna and Maxx rest on their chains near the main areas of the property. This allows guests to move freely, fish along the river, and explore without worry. As evening falls, their watch begins. They roam the property and the surrounding woods, their presence keeping predators at bay.

They move quietly through the night, their white coats blending into the moonlight. Guests often wake to find fresh paw prints in the morning dew — a subtle reminder that the guardians have been on patrol. Thanks to them, our chickens can wander during the day, our guests can rest easy, and the wilderness remains wild without being threatening.

More Than Guardians

Though they serve a serious purpose, Luna and Maxx are also beloved members of the Vida Bonita Pecos family. During the day, when they’re resting or lounging near the cabins, guests are welcome to approach them. They love attention, gentle pats, and especially belly rubs. Luna has a calm, motherly presence, while Maxx still has a playful spark that delights children and adults alike.

Their gentle nature makes them a highlight for many of our visitors. Some guests have even told us that meeting Luna and Maxx was one of the most memorable parts of their stay — a reminder that life in the wilderness can be both rugged and deeply heartwarming.

The Spirit of Vida Bonita

Luna and Maxx perfectly embody what Vida Bonita Pecos stands for — beautiful life, lived in harmony with nature. They represent the bond between humans and animals, the quiet guardianship that allows life to flourish here.

When you sit by a firepit under a sky full of stars and hear the faint sound of a dog’s bark echo through the hills, you can feel the reassurance that you’re being watched over — not just by people, but by these noble companions who consider this land their home.

A Living Lesson in Balance

In many ways, Luna and Maxx remind us of something deeper — that every thriving ecosystem needs both freedom and protection. They are a living symbol of balance: wild enough to stand guard in the woods, but loving enough to curl up next to guests for a moment of affection.

For families staying at Vida Bonita Pecos, meeting these dogs often becomes a special memory. Children learn about responsibility and nature’s rhythms, and adults appreciate the comfort of knowing that these faithful protectors are watching over the property.

So, when you book your next stay at Vida Bonita Pecos and step onto the land, take a moment to meet our loyal guardians. Look into Luna’s wise eyes or give Maxx a well-earned scratch behind the ears. You’ll quickly understand why these two aren’t just part of the experience — they are the heart of it.

Because here, at Vida Bonita Pecos, life isn’t just about escaping to the wilderness — it’s about finding beauty in the bond between land, animals, and people.
