The Wildlife You might See At Pecos BNB

One crisp morning, as I walked up the path to the top cabin, I unexpectedly encountered a group of eight mule deer grazing peacefully on the mountainside. Their large, gentle eyes met mine briefly before they gracefully bounded away, their white tails flickering like whispers against the woodland backdrop. This surprise encounter encapsulates the harmonious relationship between our haven and the surrounding wilderness.

A Family's Dream

In May 2024, my family and I embraced a shared dream by acquiring what was formerly known as Wilderness Gateway BNB. Drawn by the enchanting beauty of the Santa Fe National Forest, we envisioned creating a sanctuary where guests could immerse themselves in nature's splendor. 

Our property is a living tapestry of the region's rich flora and fauna:

• Ponderosa Pines: These majestic trees, with their towering presence and distinctive vanilla-scented bark, provide a fragrant canopy that whispers tales of the forest.

• Aspen Groves: In the fall, these trees transform into a golden spectacle, their leaves shimmering like coins in the gentle breeze, creating a mesmerizing dance of light and color.

• Wildflowers: Throughout the warmer months, our meadows burst into a vibrant mosaic of Indian paintbrush, lupine, and columbine, painting the landscape with hues that delight the senses.

  

Wildlife Encounters

The surrounding wilderness is home to a diverse array of wildlife:

• Elk: Often seen grazing in nearby meadows during the early morning and late afternoon, their impressive antlers and stately demeanor make for a captivating sight.

• Black Bears: While sightings are rare, the surrounding forest is home to black bears. Their presence is a testament to the pristine nature of our environment.

• Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep: The Pecos Wilderness boasts one of America's healthiest herds of these impressive animals. With their muscular build and curved horns, they are a symbol of the rugged wilderness.
