Why Your Next Writers' or Artists' Retreat Should Be at Vida Bonita Pecos

Jun 21, 2025

In the creative life, inspiration often hides behind noise—emails, traffic, deadlines, and distractions. Sometimes, to tap into your best work, you need to get away from the noise entirely. At Vida Bonita Pecos, nestled deep in the heart of the Pecos Wilderness, you’ll find exactly that: stillness, serenity, and soul-stirring natural beauty. It’s a place where the only signal that matters is the one from within.

As someone who once worked as a world-class surgeon in Houston and Albuquerque, I lived a fast-paced, high-pressure life. And I loved it—until I realized I was ready for something else. My life partner Erica and I made the choice to leave behind city life and move to northern New Mexico, closer to her family and closer to nature. We now live onsite at Vida Bonita Pecos with our two daughters, Maysen and Milani, and every inch of this property has been shaped with intention, love, and a deep appreciation for meaningful experiences.

This is more than a lodging business—it's a place where creativity is nurtured.

Nature as Muse: Where the Landscape Fuels Creativity

One of the most immediate things guests notice when they arrive at Vida Bonita Pecos is the quiet. Not just the absence of traffic or buzzing phones—but a deep, grounding silence broken only by the wind in the spruce trees or the soft murmur of the Pecos River. When you're here, it’s easier to hear your own thoughts. It’s easier to dream.

Artists and writers who visit us often say the landscape itself feels alive with creative energy. Maybe it’s the way the sunlight filters through the trees in the early morning, or the way the stars seem to drip across the sky at night. Maybe it’s the sound of footsteps on a pine-needle trail or the scent of woodsmoke from the firepit. However it speaks to you, the wilderness here doesn’t just invite stillness—it demands presence.

And presence, more than anything else, is what every creative person needs.

Designed with Artists and Writers in Mind

Whether you’re sketching a new series, outlining your memoir, or finishing a screenplay, we offer a variety of unique and comfortable lodging options to support your creative flow:

  • The Crestview Cabin: A fully remodeled 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom retreat with two spacious decks, perfect for writing sessions with mountain views or painting in the golden afternoon light. With top-end finishes and cozy furniture, it’s built for long stays and deep work.

  • The Twin Pines Duplex: Each side includes a queen bed, new bathroom, and kitchenette. Ideal for solo retreats or pairs of artists who want privacy with the option to collaborate.

  • The 1973 Retro Camper: This charming, remodeled camper sits tucked between tall blue spruces, just a short walk across a meadow to the Pecos River. With a small kitchen, shower, toilet, fold-down beds, and an outdoor deck strung with solar Edison lights, it’s an artist’s dream hideaway—especially for those inspired by vintage aesthetics or whimsical vibes.

No matter which option you choose, you’ll find it designed not just for comfort but for inspiration. You’ll notice the details—wood finishes, natural light, intentional layouts. We built it all for people like you.

The Tech Balance: Offline Stillness, Online Support

One thing to note: cell service here is minimal to nonexistent, and that’s often a blessing in disguise. You're not constantly interrupted by notifications or pulled into the frantic energy of everyday digital life.

However, for those who need to stay connected or do remote work, we offer WiFi internet access at every lodging option. So whether you’re uploading your latest writing to an editor or sharing a photo of your painting session by the river, you can stay in touch—on your own terms.

Thoughtful Amenities to Support Your Flow

We believe the little things matter. That’s why we’ve included:

  • Filtered spring water from the tap

  • Fire pits and picnic tables for outdoor meals or creative brainstorms

  • Hiking trails and meadow walks to refresh your mind

  • Fully equipped kitchens for preparing nourishing meals

  • Quiet hours from 11 PM to 7 AM so you can write late into the night or rise early to paint in peace

Want to bring your family or a creative partner? Several of our lodgings, including the duplex and camper, allow for tenting nearby—making it perfect for parents with kids, or a young couple treating older family members to a more comfortable wilderness stay.

Every detail at Vida Bonita Pecos is intentional. From the location of the firepits to the design of the kitchens, we’ve brought the same attention to detail that I used in surgery to your stay here. We didn’t just build cabins—we curated experiences.

We want you to leave here not just refreshed, but transformed. We’ve had guests arrive stuck in creative ruts, only to leave with finished chapters, new ideas, and a sense of clarity they didn’t expect.
